This site details some of the history of Roncenvalles including pointing out that the beginnings of the Monestry were in 1127 when the bishop of Pamplona created a fraternity of lay people and Priests to take care of Pilgrims in the Orreaga-Roncesvalles area. In 1135 a collegiate of canons took charge of the Pilgrim hospital in Roncenvalles and the bishop gave this group the incomes of the valleys nearby to support their work.
