At home I'm responsible for all lunch pack-ups for when we go to work including those of my parents and, when looking up ideas on what to include, I read that cards with pictures and facts can encourage reading and thought that that sounded like a good thing and so often include them in my Mum and Dad's lunches.
While we're in Portugal Mum will be working for only four days but I thought that I should leave her something a bit special to include - I'll put the cards in the small 'money envelopes' so that she can't read them early and mark each with the day when they should be read so that she opens them in the right order.
I started by drawing a map on five cards (because I thought that she might work on the Friday as well or that she might go out somewhere on that day) - this was not fun trying to work out how to 'stretch' the map so far and keep it (somewhat) accurate. The cards are 5X8cm.

Then I measured out the cards on the computer and wrote a fact on each that was about one on the places on that card and printed this out on blue paper before cutting the maps and facts out and gluing them back to back.
The five facts are:
- Porto is situated on the Rio Douro - the 'River of Gold' and it is from the city of Porto that, in the 12th century, the independent nation of Portugal took its name
- The legend of the Barcelos cock is that an innocent Pilgrim was wrongly condemned to death - he proclaimed his innocence and said that were he hung the roasted cock would rise from the judge's plate as proof of his innocence. The Pilgrim was hung and the cock rose up. The judge hurried to the gallows and the Pilgrim was still alive
- spain is one hour ahead of Portugal and Tui is in Galicia
- In Tivo there are hot waters to bathe the feet of Pilgrims and a parish church dedicated to St. Thiomas a Becket - Iglesia parroquial de Santo Tomas de Cantervury
- Santiago de Compostela mean 'Saint James of the field of satrs' for the legend that says a Shepherd was guided to the body of Saint James by a bright star
Maybe this is something to do for someone before they set off, while they train, to encourage them? Or more facts could be done for all of the days that a person is walking and left behind for their family. Just don't do these as something to take for someone who's walking, they won't appreciate the extra weight!
