A
concern for anyone walking the Camino is cost, I am not going to discuss the
cost of getting to and from your starting and end points as this can change so
much with price of fuel, season and where you are traveling to but rather at
costs on the Camino.
For
accommodation you can stay in Albergues or hotels. Albergues are priced from €0-15 in my experience although the Albergues that run on donations are becoming
rarer. In Galicia the Municipal Albergues cost €6 and in most places I paid
about €10. Some places will charge for bed and breakfast/evening meal as well
and so go up to €25 or so.
Last year
and the year before my Mum stayed in hotels and we were usually paying about €25
a night for a nice room which could often have accommodated two people. Once we
did spend €40 for her for a night but this was in the only hotel for miles
around - in smaller places expect to pay more. Before we left we used one of
the websites to book all of her hotels which saved us a lot of hassle.
My Mum also had her
bag carried – this cost €6-12 a day (depending on who you booked with).
If you are
eating a Pilgrim menu every night (three courses with water/wine and bread
usually) expect to pay €8-12 with the usual price being €10.
If cooking
yourself we can easily do a meal for three for €10 (a bit more if it’s Mum
easting with us as then we need everything to be Gluten Free). You can spend
more of course and we have done when seeing new yogurts/chocolate/cakes to try.
For snacks
during the day me and my sister will usually have a hot drink each and a slice
of tortilla/cake between us which comes to €3-6 (and seems to get more
expensive the closer we get to Santiago) but there is variation in this such as
the time we paid €3 each for an omelet because we saw someone else eating one
and just had to have one!
For the
midday meal we usually make sandwiches (about €1 for bread between us and
another €1 each for meat or cheese) or cafes sell bocadillos (sandwiches) for
about €5.
Breakfast
is usually a breakfast bar bought in boxes of 5 or 6 as we go for €1-2.
This makes
a day about €28 (or £24 or $31) if staying in an albergue and eating both meals
out.
Do you
have any other questions about daily costs? Let me know in the comments and I’ll
do my best to answer them.
