In the quire of Saint Werburgh's Cathedral in Chester there is a carved oak Pilgrim on the choir stalls which dates from the 14th century (about 1380) so when I visited Chester I went to find him
We found him just before the quire was closed for choir practice but I managed to get these two pictures of him.

You can (possibly) see that there's a small hole in his right hand to hold a staff - the original is not there any more but sometimes a modern replica is in place.
Other carvings include: details of Arthorian legends, an elephant, mythological beasts and Aesop's fables.
The original quire was built by Richard of Chester who was Edward 1's engineer who usually undertook military projects.
